Grass Fed Meats (Why grass fed?) (Ordering Information) Pasture Raised Eggs: Available Year Round. Laying hens are a specialty at Day Spring Farm as the Baker children care for them daily. The hens are housed at night in an Eggmobile, a portable chicken house. It has a spacious portable yard and is rotated weekly to fresh pasture. The house protects the hens at night and gives them a clean place to lay their eggs, and the fence protects them from predators by offering a safe alternative to free-ranging. Pasture Raised Chickens: Available from May-December Day Spring Farm Family Raised Natural Chicken is now available! We raise our Cornish Rock cross broilers on pasture on our own farm with our own hands. They start out life in our warm and clean brooder. What that means is a barn devoted to their care: warmed to 90 degrees with our radiant heaters, clean wood shavings as their bedding, fresh water, and Sunrise Farm NON GMO natural feed! This is a great feed that we go to Shenandoah Valley to purchase directly from the farmers that are growing and grinding it! Their feed is tested and guaranteed Non GMO. We also offer sea kelp and locally mined grit to aid in proper digestion! After their baby days in the brooder/nursery, they are carried by the Bakers and their 4 children (well maybe just three of them-baby Emily isn't so helpful yet!) to their new home, on pasture. They live in pasture pens, just like the ones found at Polyface Farms, where they receive fresh water, sunshine, grass, and bugs (yes they were designed to eat bugs!) and more Non GMO grains. We have found that at least a third of their diet is composed of the grass and bugs they harvest from our fields. Their pens are moved every morning to supply a fresh buffet of greens. At night they are patrolled by our devoted guardian dogs (because the local possums and raccoons like our chicken even more than we do!). At about eight weeks they are full grown and we process them humanely on our farm. The stress of shipping a bird cannot be understood unless you can see it first hand, so we rest easy knowing that our birds are never under that kind of stress. We also process by hand and not with an eviscerating machine so there is quality control and we can be sure your meat is clean and free from manure. They are then cooled and sold fresh or frozen! What you have is high quality meat that was raised humanely, sustainably, and locally by the Bakers! Whole chickens are available for $3.85/lb* (avg size is 4 lbs) Cut up chickens available once a month by request *As of October 2011. Check with us for latest pricing. Pasture Raised Turkeys: Available for Thanksgiving season. Our Turkeys start out either hatching in the incubator in our basement or being shipped from a hatchery in the mail in a nice cozy straw lined box. We raise most of our poults, but must order in extra each year. They arrive when they are 1-2 days old! They are all raised in our safe warm brooder for a few weeks and then moved out onto pasture. The first few months of their lives are much like the production of the chickens. They are housed in the pasture pens being moved to fresh grass daily. Something happens at about 3-4 months of age, they get too tall! All of a sudden they shoot up and can't stand in the pens without bumping their heads. At that point each year we unroll the specialized electric poultry fence and bring out a portable roosting shed and release them into a protected part of our farm. We assign our most trusted guardian dog to patrol their field day and night because they are the most valuable poultry we raise (and the raccoons know it!). For the remaining few months until Thanksgiving they enjoy freedom to roam during the day and roost at night. They continue to eat non gmo grains, grass, fresh water and bugs. They are available in Sm (8-12 lbs), Med (12-15 lbs) and Large (15+). We request a $40 deposit to be mailed to us for reservations and we try to fill your size order to the best of our ability. Grass-fed Lamb and Wool: Available Year Round. Grass fed lamb from our Romney and Romney cross sheep is the most delicious meat you will ever taste. We harvest all of our lambs after they are full grown. The lambs are raised by their mothers in the rolling pastures and they are weaned and grown on grass until they are large enough to harvest. The grass fed meat is delicious, lean and healthy. Lamb is available by the cut or by custom order. Wool from our sheep is available in raw fleece, roving, yarn and pelts. Our yarns are custom colored with natural dyes, or sold natural without dye. No chemicals here! Grass-fed Beef: Available Year Round. Scottish Highland Cattle are one of the oldest breeds of beef cattle. They are sturdy animals with long shaggy hair to withstand any kind of weather. Both cows and bulls have horns, which create a dramatic appearance. Highlands are good foragers, making good use of the grass they eat. They are naturally lean because they store their fat in a layer under their skin instead of the fat being marbled throughout the meat. As a result they are very low in cholesterol. Our herd is raised in a model like God intended, by rotationally grazing them on pasture with no grain supplements. The calves remain with their mothers until they are weaned, and then they finish on grass. Why Grass Fed? There are many reasons to choose Naturally Raised Grass-Fed Meats.
